International Day of Education 2027 Is Sunday, Jan. 24; UNESCO Has Not Set the Theme

International Day of Education falls on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2027, because the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed Jan. 24 as the day, according to the UN and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO had not announced a 2027 theme when we checked on Nov. 4, 2026. This story adds a weekday table to 2032, the 2026 theme labeled as last year’s, and a free activity sheet.

Which weekday is International Day of Education through 2032?

The date is fixed at Jan. 24, so only the weekday moves. We computed these from the calendar.

Because 2027 is a Sunday, schools that mark the day may hold activities on a school day instead. Neither the UN nor UNESCO says anything about school schedules in what we read. Put the date on your January 2027 printable calendar or the printable weekly calendar.

What is the International Day of Education 2027 theme?

Not yet announced. UNESCO’s page for 2027 returned an error when we checked on Nov. 4, 2026, so we print no theme and no event details for 2027.

For comparison, the 2026 theme was “The power of youth in co-creating education,” per UNESCO. The 2026 global event took place on Jan. 23, 2026 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, in a hybrid format. The UN and UNESCO pages give different end times, so we print none. UNESCO also listed a LearningPlanet Festival for Jan. 21-28, 2026. We found no confirmed 2027 equivalent. We also do not list themes for years other than 2026, because we did not confirm them.

Why does UNESCO mark the day?

UNESCO’s page states a principle: “Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.” The UN page links the proclamation as General Assembly resolution 73/25. We do not give an adoption date, because we did not confirm one.

On Mar. 25, 2026, UNESCO published “More children out of school for the 7th year in a row, up to 273 million.” Its text says the number of children and young people out of school has risen for the seventh consecutive year, up to 273 million. We give no reference year because we did not confirm one.

How can a class or family take part?

For 2026, UNESCO offered a guide and a social media pack, and ran a “Call for good practices on meaningful youth engagement in education.” We have not seen the 2027 versions, so check the UNESCO day page before Jan. 24.
