Applications for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) opened today, Friday 30 October 2026, for courses starting from 1 January 2027 to 31 August 2027, according to a GOV.UK announcement that points students to the Student Loans Company (SLC) application. GOV.UK says students who have not had student finance before can get a Tuition Fee Loan of up to £39,160. This story adds a table that matches your course start date to the right route, a table of the key numbers and a one-page checklist.
Which route applies to your course start date?
GOV.UK says students in England on undergraduate and certain postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 to 31 August 2027 can now apply for the LLE. Its overview page also says there is a different way to apply if your course starts before 1 January 2027. The 2027/28 academic year is a later window.
| Course start date | Route to apply | Status on 30 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Before Friday 1 January 2027 | The different, existing route that GOV.UK describes | Not the LLE |
| Friday 1 January 2027 to Tuesday 31 August 2027 | Lifelong Learning Entitlement | Open now |
| From September 2027 (2027/28 academic year) | Lifelong Learning Entitlement | Opens in Spring 2027; date not yet announced |

GOV.UK also says students who started a course before 1 January 2027 cannot apply for the LLE for that course, and that returners after 12 months or more away apply for the LLE for a course starting on or after 1 January 2027. No application deadline is listed on the pages we checked. The January 2027 printable calendar is a handy place to mark your own course start.

Who can apply for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement?
GOV.UK lists most qualifications from level 4 to 6 as eligible, along with courses and modules of Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs). Your provider must be registered with the Office for Students (OfS).
For full support you must live in England and have 3 years’ continuous residence in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before the month your course starts. GOV.UK adds that you may be eligible even if you have studied before.
How do you apply for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement?
GOV.UK says you need a GOV.UK One Login account to apply. Even if you already have a Student Finance England account, you will still need to create a new account for LLE funding. If your course lasts longer than a year, you only need to reapply for each year you want funding.
The 2027/28 academic year follows the same entitlement but a later window. GOV.UK says those applications go live in Spring 2027 and has not given the date. The printable yearly calendar can hold that date once it is announced.
