What is the NRF 4-5-4 calendar?
NRF describes the 4-5-4 calendar as a retail sales reporting and merchandising calendar. Each quarter has three fiscal months of 4, 5 and 4 weeks, so a quarter is 13 weeks and a standard year is 52. On NRF’s 2026-2028 grid the pattern repeats in every quarter: February 4 weeks, March 5, April 4; May 4, June 5, July 4; August 4, September 5, October 4; November 4, December 5, January 4.

Why is fiscal 2028 a 53-week year?
NRF’s 2026-2028 calendar carries the footnote “Fiscal year 2028 is a 53 week year.” On its 4-5-4 page NRF explains that “it is sometimes necessary to add a 53rd week to the end of the calendar for sales reporting purposes only.” In NRF’s answer to how it decides, a 53rd week is added if, after laying out the 52-week calendar for a year, there are “four or more days left in January.”
In fiscal 2028 the extra week is Sunday, Jan. 28 through Saturday, Feb. 3, 2029, so fiscal January 2028 has 5 weeks, from Dec. 31, 2028 to Feb. 3, 2029. The same page lists 2006, 2012, 2017 and 2023 as earlier 53-week years, according to NRF.
Where do Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026 land?
Fiscal November 2026 runs Sunday, Nov. 1 through Saturday, Nov. 28, so it holds both Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Cyber Monday starts fiscal December, which begins Sunday, Nov. 29. Black Friday ends up in fiscal November one day before the month closes, which is a computed result from NRF’s week grid, not an NRF statement. In fiscal 2027, fiscal November runs Oct. 31 to Nov. 27, 2027.
When does NRF release monthly sales figures?
NRF says the calendar also establishes Sales Release dates, which have historically been on the first Thursday following the month’s end. We did not check the release dates for specific months, so use NRF’s own page for them.
