NYC Public Schools Calendar 2026-27: Every Recess and Holiday, Plus a Remote Election Day on Nov. 3

New York City public schools close for Thanksgiving recess on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27, and for winter recess from Thursday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Jan. 1, according to the NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) 2026-27 calendar. The next date families need to note is sooner: on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, school is in session remotely for all students instead of being a day off.

The 2026-27 school year began Thursday, Sept. 10, and ends Monday, June 28, 2027.

Election Day is a remote day

NYCPS lists Tuesday, Nov. 3 as “in session remotely for all students.” Many city school buildings serve as polling places on Election Day. On Feb. 1, a professional development day, high school students and students in grades 6-12 schools stay home while other students attend. On June 8, Clerical Day, there are no classes for 3-K, pre-K, elementary, middle, K-12 and standalone D75 students.

Parent-teacher conferences and early dismissals

Students are dismissed three hours early on afternoon conference days:

Religious holidays on this calendar

The city closes schools for Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, matching the date in our Ramadan 2027 calendar, and for Eid al-Adha on Monday, May 17. Diwali and Lunar New Year, both school holidays in New York City, fall on weekends this year: Diwali on Sunday, Nov. 8 (see our Diwali 2026 guide) and Lunar New Year on Saturday, Feb. 6 (our Lunar New Year 2027 guide).

Regents and the last weeks

Regents exams run Jan. 26-29 and June 15-18 and 21-25, 2027. The spring semester begins Tuesday, Feb. 2. The last day for students is Monday, June 28.

This calendar covers NYC public schools from 3-K through grade 12. Charter, private and parochial schools, NYC Early Education Centers and family child care programs set their own dates. On snow days or emergencies, NYCPS may hold school remotely rather than close.
