Friday’s Connections: Sports Edition from The Athletic and New York Times (NYT) Games is puzzle #767, for Oct. 30, 2026, and only one of its 16 tiles is a number. Hints for each group come first, then the answers in a spoiler section.

How the Sports Edition works

It is the sports version of Connections, built by The Athletic with New York Times Games. You sort 16 sports terms into four groups of four and can make four mistakes. Yellow is usually the easiest group, purple the trickiest. It launched on Feb. 9, 2025, with a football puzzle, and new puzzles post at midnight local time, according to The Athletic’s announcement.

Solving tips

Look for a tile that fits two groups and settle the group with no decoy first. When a name could sit in a team list or a roster, check whether the other three entries of that list really match it. Friday’s board has a few of those, so hold back on your first guess.

Friday’s hints, #767, Oct. 30, 2026

Friday’s board mixes names of teams, people and one number.

  • Yellow: Four names of teams, pro and college, that all share one home state.
  • Green: Four quarterbacks (QB) who have thrown passes for the same franchise.
  • Blue: Four things linked to one famous quarterback, including a nickname and a number.
  • Purple: Four first names that all go in front of the same surname.

Watch for the overlap: one of the first names also belongs to a coach tied to the yellow state, and another is a quarterback who is not part of the green group.

Friday’s answers, #767, Oct. 30, 2026 (spoilers)

The 16 tiles, spelled out: Marc Bulger, Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford and Kurt Warner, all quarterbacks (QB) for the Los Angeles or St. Louis Rams; Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin Badgers, with the Brewers, Bucks and Packers; for Joe Montana, No. 16, the San Francisco 49ers, his nickname Joe Cool and his college, Notre Dame; and Bo Ryan, the Wisconsin basketball coach, Buddy Ryan, a football coach, Matt Ryan, a quarterback, and Nolan Ryan, a pitcher.

  • Yellow, Wisconsin Teams: Brewers, Bucks, Packers, Wisconsin
  • Green, Rams QBs, Past and Present: Bulger, Goff, Stafford, Warner
  • Blue, Associated With Joe Montana: 16, 49ers, Joe Cool, Notre Dame
  • Purple, ___ Ryan: Bo, Buddy, Matt, Nolan

Also in the news Friday: Brewers World Series parade: Friday, Oct. 30, time, route and rally.

Why Friday’s traps worked

Bo Ryan coached at Wisconsin, so Bo pulls toward the yellow group. Matt Ryan is a quarterback, so Matt pulls toward the green group, but he never played for the Rams. The 49ers look like one more team for a list of teams, yet here they belong with Joe Montana, and 16 is the only number on the board.

Beebom and the solution on Yahoo Tech list the same four groups. Puzzle #768 arrives at midnight.
