Quebec’s winter tire requirement starts Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2026, and runs to Monday, March 15, 2027, and drivers who do not comply are liable to a fine of $200 to $300, according to the Gouvernement du Québec (all dollar amounts in this story are Canadian dollars). British Columbia (BC) has had its rule in force since Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. The table below sets out each province’s official rule, with weekdays for the 2026-27 season, and a one-page printable follows the same dates.

From Tuesday, Nov. 3, there are 28 days until Quebec’s rule starts. To keep the date in sight, write it on our December 2026 printable calendar.

What does Quebec require from Dec. 1?

The Gouvernement du Québec says: “Your vehicle must be winter-ready from December 1 to March 15.” The requirement applies to all motor vehicles registered in Quebec, including rental vehicles. A tire designed for winter driving must be marked with the pictogram shown on the province’s page, or be studded.

Studded tires are permitted from October 15 to May 1 on passenger vehicles, taxis and commercial vehicles up to 3,000 kg. In 2026-27 that is Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, to Saturday, May 1, 2027. Quebec’s fine is $200 to $300. Mark Monday, March 15, 2027, as the last day of the requirement on the March 2027 printable calendar.

When do you need winter tires in BC?

The BC government says winter tires or chains are required on most routes in British Columbia from October 1 to April 30. That is Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, to Friday, April 30, 2027. For select highways that do not run through mountain passes or high-snowfall areas, “tire and chain requirements end March 31”, which is Wednesday, March 31, 2027.

The province says the signs are enforced by the police, the ministry or other enforcement officials. Its current page does not list a fine. In a Sept. 26, 2016, release, BC Gov News said drivers without the proper winter tires on designated routes could receive a fine of $121, and a fine of $109 for tires below the 3.5 mm minimum tread depth. Those are 2016 amounts, and we have not confirmed what the fines are now.

How does Manitoba’s winter tire loan work?

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) says it will finance up to $2,000 per vehicle at prime plus 2% interest, with payments spread over one to four years through monthly withdrawals. MPI says interest rates are determined by the Bank of Canada and are subject to change without notice, so we do not give a rate. The page states no application deadline.

One rule changed this season. Effective Oct. 1, 2026, MPI says approved tires must also be designed and marketed solely for winter driving conditions, and must display the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. This is a loan program; the MPI page does not state a legal requirement for Manitoba drivers.

What does the three-peak snowflake symbol mean?

The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) says tires marked with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol must pass the F-1805 Driving Traction Test on a medium packed snow surface. TRAC adds that Transport Canada sets the rules under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

What are the studded tire dates in Atlantic Canada?

Newfoundland and Labrador’s government said on April 16, 2026, that under the Highway Traffic Act, studded tires are only permitted between November 1 and April 30. That advisory extended the 2025-26 season to May 15; we have seen no extension for 2026-27.

Nova Scotia’s Studded Tires Regulations allow studs between the 15th day of October in any year and the 31st day of May in the next year following. Nova Scotia is moving to a new Traffic Safety Act, and the regulation text is the one posted, so check before you use studs late in spring.

What about Ontario and the other provinces?

Ontario’s winter driving page, last updated Dec. 29, 2022, states no legal requirement. It says: “You could also get a discount on your auto insurance – ask your insurance provider.” We found no official page confirming a legal winter tire requirement in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island, Yukon or the Northwest Territories, so we list no rule for them.

Which winter tire dates should you print for 2026-27?

The printable has the five dated items from the official pages in one grid: BC’s Oct. 1 start, MPI’s Oct. 1 loan change, Quebec’s Oct. 15 studs date, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nov. 1 studs date and Quebec’s Dec. 1 requirement. It also lists what we could not confirm. Travelling in winter?
