The deadline to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2026 is Thursday, April 15, 2027. That follows the rule in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 969, which lets you contribute for a tax year through the return due date; its example reads “You can make contributions to your HSA for 2025 through April 15, 2026.” The IRS Pay taxes on time page says “The filing deadline for 2026 tax returns is April 15, 2027.” The 2026 edition of Publication 969 is not out yet, so the date applies the current edition’s rule. This story does not cover filing extensions.

What are the HSA contribution limits for 2026 and 2027?

The 2026 limits come from Revenue Procedure 2025-19 (Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-21). The 2027 limits come from Revenue Procedure 2026-24 (Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-25, June 15, 2026). We also cover the 2027 figures alongside other tax numbers in our 2027 tax brackets and 401(k) limits story.

Item20262027
HSA limit, self-only coverage$4,400$4,500
HSA limit, family coverage$8,750$9,000
Plan minimum deductible, self-only$1,700$1,750
Plan minimum deductible, family$3,400$3,500
Plan out-of-pocket maximum, self-only$8,500$8,700
Plan out-of-pocket maximum, family$17,000$17,400

The deductible and out-of-pocket rows are rules for the health plan, not amounts you can put in the account. The 2026 rule says the deductible is “not less than $1,700 for self-only coverage or $3,400 for family coverage” and that out-of-pocket costs “do not exceed $8,500 for self-only coverage or $17,000 for family coverage.”

How does the age 55 catch-up work?

Publication 969 says an eligible individual who is “age 55 or older at the end of your tax year” gets a limit “increased by $1,000.” With self-only coverage, that puts the 2026 limit at $5,400. For family coverage, where spouses share the limit, check how Publication 969 splits the catch-up before you contribute.

Do employer contributions count toward the limit?

Yes. Publication 969 says you must reduce the amount you can contribute by employer contributions. If an employer deposits money for 2026, only the rest of your limit is open to you. Report all contributions on Form 8889 and file it with your Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR.

Who can contribute to an HSA in 2026?

You need coverage under a qualifying high-deductible health plan (HDHP), and these IRS rules from Publication 969 apply:

  • Medicare: beginning with the first month you are enrolled in Medicare, your contribution limit is zero.
  • Health flexible spending account (FSA): health FSA coverage generally blocks HSA contributions, with a limited-purpose exception.
  • New for 2026: under IRS news release IR-2025-119 (Dec. 9, 2025), “bronze and catastrophic plans available through an Exchange are considered HSA-compatible.” Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, an otherwise eligible individual enrolled in certain direct primary care arrangements can also contribute.

The same release says telehealth care before the deductible is permanent, for plan years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2025. These changes come from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

What if your coverage changed during 2026?

Publication 969 describes a last-month rule. If you are eligible on the first day of the last month of the tax year, you are considered an eligible individual for the entire year. For 2026 that month is December. A testing period “begins with the last month of your tax year” and “ends on the last day of the 12th month following that month.” Check the full rule in Publication 969 before relying on it, and report contributions on Form 8889.

How do you make a prior-year contribution?

Tell your HSA custodian that a deposit made in 2027 is for tax year 2026, so it is reported for the right year.

HSA or health FSA: how do the deadlines differ?

They are separate accounts with separate rules. An HSA contribution deadline follows the tax return due date; the rules for a health FSA differ, and our story on the FSA use-it-or-lose-it deadline covers them. Because health FSA coverage generally blocks HSA contributions, check which you have first.
