Tax Refund Schedule 2027: When to Expect Your Refund, From E-File to Deposit
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days. See 2027 e-file dates plus 3 weeks, and mailed returns plus 6 weeks.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said on Jan. 26, 2026, that it issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days, and its refunds page lists 3 weeks from the e-file date for an e-filed return. That guideline is the base for this page. It adds 3 weeks to sample 2027 filing dates and 6 weeks to mailed returns, then covers the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) rule and what the IRS says about direct deposit and paper checks.
The date the 2027 filing season opens is not yet announced. The 2026 season opened on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, according to the IRS announcement (IR-2026-12). Our story on when tax season starts in 2027 tracks the opening date.
How long does an IRS refund take in 2027?
The IRS refunds page, updated Oct. 16, 2026, gives two timelines:
- E-filed return: 3 weeks from the date you e-filed.
- Mailed return: 6 or more weeks from the date the IRS received your mailed return.
In its January 2026 announcement the IRS added: “While the IRS issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days, some returns require additional review and may take longer.” It also said direct deposit is the fastest way to receive a refund. Treat the dates below as a guide. A return that needs review can take longer.
Refund date table: e-file dates plus 3 weeks
The table uses the IRS guideline of 3 weeks from the e-file date. Dates were computed from the calendar, and each is a Monday or a Thursday because the sample filing day is.
| If you e-file on | About 3 weeks later |
|---|---|
| Mon., Feb. 1, 2027 | Mon., Feb. 22, 2027 |
| Mon., Feb. 15, 2027 | Mon., Mar. 8, 2027 |
| Mon., Mar. 1, 2027 | Mon., Mar. 22, 2027 |
| Mon., Mar. 15, 2027 | Mon., Apr. 5, 2027 |
| Thu., Apr. 1, 2027 | Thu., Apr. 22, 2027 |
| Thu., Apr. 15, 2027 (Tax Day) | Thu., May 6, 2027 |
These are sample dates for planning. They are not IRS-issued deposit dates, and the filing dates are our picks, not IRS dates. Use the February, March and April 2027 printable calendars to mark your own filing day and the date three weeks on. The printable tracker with these rows is listed under this story’s downloads.
Paper return refund dates: mailed returns plus 6 weeks
The IRS refunds page says a mailed return takes 6 or more weeks from the date the IRS received it. The count starts at receipt, not at the postmark, so the table below uses the date the IRS receives your envelope.
| If the IRS receives your mail on | 6 weeks later (or more) |
|---|---|
| Mon., Feb. 1, 2027 | Mon., Mar. 15, 2027 |
| Mon., Mar. 1, 2027 | Mon., Apr. 12, 2027 |
| Thu., Apr. 15, 2027 | Thu., May 27, 2027 |
Where’s My Refund? shows a status 4 weeks after you file a paper return, compared with 24 hours after you e-file a current year return, per the IRS refunds page.
When do EITC refunds arrive in 2027?
The IRS has not announced 2027 dates for refunds that include the EITC or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). Here is what it said for 2026, and only for 2026. In IR-2026-12 the IRS said it expected EITC and ACTC refunds “by March 2, 2026, for taxpayers who chose direct deposit and have no other issues with their returns.” It added that “projected deposit dates for early EITC/ACTC filers will appear in Where’s My Refund? by February 21, 2026.”
For 2027, check the IRS announcement when the filing season opens. We will update this story when the IRS publishes dates.
Do paper refund checks still exist?
In IR-2025-94, dated Sept. 23, 2025, the IRS said “paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning on Sept. 30, 2025, as required by Executive Order 14247, to the extent permitted by law.” Together with the IRS statement that direct deposit is the fastest way to receive a refund, that is the reason the table above leads with e-filed returns.
