Pancake Day 2027 is Tuesday, 9 February, and Mothering Sunday in the UK is Sunday, 7 March, according to dates we worked out from the Church of England’s calendar. The church’s table of moveable dates gives Ash Wednesday as 10 February 2027 and Easter Day as 28 March 2027. Pancake Day is the day before Ash Wednesday, and Mothering Sunday is 21 days before Easter Day. The table below carries both dates through 2030.

Pancake Day and Mothering Sunday dates, 2027 to 2030

The Church of England’s calendar lists Ash Wednesday and Easter Day for each year. Shrove Tuesday, known as Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday. The church’s page on the origins of Mothering Sunday says it falls “on the fourth Sunday of Lent”, which is three weeks before Easter Day. We counted the dates from those two rules and checked each weekday.

When is the Olney Pancake Race in 2027?

The Olney Pancake Race organiser says on its registration page: “We’re looking forward to the 2027 Race on Shrove Tuesday 9 February.” The 2027 start time has not been announced. In 2025, Olney Town Council listed the start as 11:55am and described the event as the “world famous Pancake Race”, in which the ladies of Olney compete on Shrove Tuesday.

Is Pancake Day or Mothering Sunday a bank holiday?

No. GOV.UK’s bank holidays list, last updated on 24 November 2025, names these dates for England and Wales in 2027: 1 January, Good Friday on 26 March, Easter Monday on 29 March, 3 May, 31 May, 30 August, 27 December and 28 December. Pancake Day and Mothering Sunday are not on it. Easter weekend 2027 runs from Friday 26 March to Monday 29 March. Mothering Sunday, 7 March, comes three weeks before it. How does UK Mothering Sunday differ from US Mother’s Day?

The UK date moves with Easter. The US date does not: under 36 U.S.C. § 117, “The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day”.
