What's Open and Closed on New Year's Eve and Day 2027: Mail, Banks, Markets, Stores

New Year’s Day falls on Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists it as a federal holiday, so federal offices are closed. New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026, is not a federal holiday. For many people the holiday makes a three-day weekend, Friday, Jan. 1, through Sunday, Jan. 3. Is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve 2026?

Yes, for stocks. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced on Dec. 23, 2025, that it is closed Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, and it lists no early close for Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026, so that day is a full trading day. The only early close the NYSE lists for late 2026 is Thursday, Dec. 24, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).

Bonds differ. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) recommends an early close at 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 31, and a full closure on Friday, Jan. 1. A trader watching both markets gets a full stock session and a shortened bond session on the same day.

Is mail delivered on New Year’s Day 2027?

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) lists New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, among its 2027 holidays, so there is no regular mail delivery that day. USPS lists no changes for Dec. 31. For shipping cutoffs before the holidays, see our USPS holiday shipping deadlines for 2026.

Are banks open on New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve?

The Federal Reserve Board’s holiday list for 2027 includes “New Year’s Day, January 1,” and Federal Reserve Banks are closed that day. Banks that follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule are closed too. December 31 is not on the list. Branch hours on that Thursday are set by each bank, so check yours.

Which stores are open on New Year’s Day 2027?

Costco’s customer service page lists New Year’s Day among the days its U.S. warehouses are closed; our Costco holiday hours and closures story has the full list. Whole Foods Market says “many of our stores are open for modified hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day,” so its hours depend on the store.

Walgreens is last year’s data only. Its 2025-26 holiday hours page said stores were open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with pharmacy hours that may vary. Walmart, Target, Kroger, CVS, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Starbucks, UPS and FedEx have not announced 2026-27 hours, so use each store locator closer to the date.
