A 2027 home maintenance calendar can start with one task federal agencies put on a fixed rhythm: the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) says “Test the alarm monthly.” This story turns that rule into 12 dated test days, adds the other tasks that U.S. agencies tie to a month or season, and ends with a one-page checklist to print. Where no official interval exists, the story says so and points to your owner’s manual. The table names its sources as USFA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Ready.gov, and CO stands for carbon monoxide.
Which home maintenance tasks have official dates for 2027?
Only a short list does. The table gives each task, the 2027 date we computed and the source. The test days are our scheduling choice (the first Saturday of each month); the sources set the rule, not the weekday.
| Month | Task | 2027 date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Test smoke and CO alarms | Sat., Jan. 2 | USFA |
| January | Test the home for radon | All month | EPA |
| February | Test alarms | Sat., Feb. 6 | USFA |
| March | Test alarms; clocks spring forward | Sat., March 6; Sun., March 14 | USFA; NIST |
| April | Test alarms; declutter drains and gutters | Sat., April 3 | USFA; Ready.gov |
| May | Test alarms; Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins | Sat., May 1; Sat., May 15 | USFA; NHC |
| June | Test alarms; Atlantic hurricane season begins | Sat., June 5; Tue., June 1 | USFA; NHC |
| July | Test alarms | Sat., July 3 | USFA |
| August | Test alarms | Sat., Aug. 7 | USFA |
| September | Test alarms | Sat., Sept. 4 | USFA |
| October | Test alarms; cold-weather prep before the first freeze | Sat., Oct. 2 | USFA; Ready.gov |
| November | Test alarms; clocks fall back; both hurricane seasons end | Sat., Nov. 6; Sun., Nov. 7; Tue., Nov. 30 | USFA; NIST; NHC |
| December | Test alarms; check battery backups | Sat., Dec. 4 | USFA; Ready.gov |
The April and October placements of the drain and cold-weather tasks are ours; the sources do not tie them to a month.
How often should smoke and carbon monoxide alarms be tested and replaced?
USFA’s “Smoke Alarms” page, last reviewed Oct. 13, 2026, gives three rules. Test the alarm monthly. Replace the batteries at least once every year on alarms that use a 9-volt battery. Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years, because alarms “need to be replaced 10 years from the manufacture date.” For 10-year lithium alarms, USFA says to replace the entire alarm “according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says: “CPSC recommends consumers replace the batteries in their smoke and CO alarms annually and test the alarms monthly.” Our printable puts the yearly battery change on Sun., Nov. 7, 2027, the day daylight saving time (DST) ends under the NIST rule of 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The March start falls on the second Sunday of March, which is Sun., March 14, 2027. The smoke alarm check story has the age table, and when clocks change in 2027 lists both switches.
USFA’s carbon monoxide page, last reviewed Sept. 21, 2026, says to “Install CO alarms in a central location outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of your home.” It gives no replacement age in the text we used, so we set none.
When should you test for radon in 2027?
The EPA described January as National Radon Action Month in its Jan. 4, 2022 release: “January marks the beginning of National Radon Action Month,” “a time of year when EPA encourages everyone to test their home for radon.” The 2027 announcement is not out yet, so the January slot rests on that 2022 release. The EPA page updated Oct. 13, 2026 says “The EPA recommends homes be fixed if the radon level is 4 pCi/L,” short for picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
What does Ready.gov say to do before winter?
Ready.gov’s “Winter Weather” page, updated Nov. 3, 2026, lists three home items: “Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups”; “Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping”; and “Learn how to keep pipes from freezing.” The page gives no steps for the pipes, so we add none. Ready.gov is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the printable puts these items before the first freeze.
Ready.gov’s “Floods” page, updated Oct. 20, 2026, says “Declutter drains and gutters” and “Install check valves. Consider a sump pump with a battery.”
When is hurricane season on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts?
The National Hurricane Center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), says “Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th.” It also says “The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th and also ends November 30th.” In 2027, June 1 is a Tuesday, May 15 a Saturday and Nov. 30 a Tuesday.
Which tasks have no official interval?
We could not confirm a federal interval for furnace, heat pump or air conditioner filters, a yearly heating or cooling tune-up, water heater flushing or temperature, dryer vent cleaning, chimney inspection, fire extinguishers, escape drills, roof checks or a carbon monoxide alarm replacement age. For filters, check and replace them on the schedule in your system’s manual. The same goes for the other appliances: use the manufacturer’s manual, and write the dates in the notes area of the printable.
Print the 2027 home maintenance checklist
The one-page sheet lists the 12 monthly alarm tests, the yearly radon and battery tasks, the cold-weather and water items and the storm-season dates. Add the test days to the printable yearly calendar or to the January printable calendar, and write the dates in the notes area.
