Latest Sunrise 2027: It Comes in Early January, With Dates for 20 U.S. Cities

The latest sunrise of winter 2026-27 comes in early January 2027, after the Dec. 21 solstice: 7:20 a.m. in New York from Dec. 30 to Jan. 10, according to U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) data. Chicago’s is 7:18 a.m. from Dec. 29 to Jan. 9, and Seattle’s is 7:58 a.m. from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2. The table below lists all 20 cities, and the free printable has the same rows.

Times are local standard time for each city center, rounded to the minute by USNO, so the latest sunrise holds for several days in a row; the dates show that stretch. Dates in December are 2026, in January and February 2027. The city coordinates are the ones used in our sunset times after the clock change story.

When do mornings start getting lighter?

In every listed city the latest sunrise falls after the solstice, between Dec. 26 in Anchorage and Jan. 19 in Miami. In most of the cities it comes in the first ten days of January. After the last date in a city’s range, sunrise starts moving earlier.

The shift is slow at first. By Feb. 1, 2027, sunrise is 14 minutes earlier than its latest in New York (7:20 to 7:06 a.m.), 15 in Chicago (7:18 to 7:03 a.m.), 18 in Minneapolis (7:51 to 7:33 a.m.) and 22 in Seattle (7:58 to 7:36 a.m.). Los Angeles gains 9 minutes (6:59 to 6:50 a.m.), Houston 7 and Miami 5. Anchorage gains 56 minutes (10:16 to 9:20 a.m.).

Why the latest sunrise comes after the shortest day

The shortest day is Monday, Dec. 21, 2026, and our winter solstice story has the sunset times. Sunrise keeps getting later after the solstice because Earth’s elliptical orbit and axial tilt make solar noon drift later through December into January. The earliest sunset arrives first: New York’s sun sets earliest on Dec. 6-9 and the sun rises latest from Dec. 30 to Jan. 10, a gap of about a month in most cities.

Latitude changes the timing. Further south the latest sunrise comes later and lasts longer (Miami Jan. 7-19, Houston Jan. 5-15). Further north it comes earlier (Seattle Dec. 31-Jan. 2, Anchorage Dec. 26).

How far does sunrise jump on March 14, 2027?

Daylight saving time (DST) starts Sunday, March 14, 2027, the second Sunday of March at 2 a.m. local time, under the rule published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Sunrise then jumps about an hour later overnight, according to USNO times for Saturday, March 13 (standard time) and Sunday, March 14 (daylight time).
