The loosest clue on Wednesday’s Mini

Of the 11 clues, only one ends in an ellipsis: 3-Down, “Sorry, let me rephrase …” Nothing in it points to an object or a place. It asks for something a speaker says out loud, so no dictionary entry will match it the way a plain word clue would. A way in is to say the clue in your own voice and see which short phrase would follow.

This helps with the crossings. The answer runs the full five rows, so every one of the 5 Across entries crosses it: 1-Across, 7-Across, 8-Across, 9-Across, 10-Across. Fill any two of those rows and you can test your phrase against them before writing it in.

How the grid is built

The grid is 6 by 5, which is 30 squares, 3 of them black and 27 holding letters. The black squares are the last square of row 4 and the last two squares of row 5, so the lower-right corner is the only part cut away. The Across entries run 6, 6, 6, 5, 4 letters from top to bottom, and the Down entries run 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 3 from left to right. The longest entries are 3 Across answers of six letters (1-Across, 7-Across, 8-Across); no Down answer is longer than five.
