Today’s Wordle from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #1961, for Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, edited by Tracy Bennett. The answer uses five different letters, two of them vowels, which makes a vowel-rich first guess a good start. Work down the clues one at a time, and only scroll to the last section if you want the answer itself.

How Wordle works

You get six tries to find a five-letter word. After each guess, a green tile means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the word at all. A letter that appears twice is only marked twice if you guess it twice.

Six clues, gentle to strong

  1. Part of speechit is a noun.
  2. Topica reptile with no legs.
  3. Vowelstwo vowel letters, I and E. The I comes second and the E comes fourth.
  4. Repeated letterno, all five letters are different.
  5. First letterV.
  6. Strong nudgea venomous snake.

Guessing tips for today

The word ends in R, so a guess that puts R in the last spot can turn a tile green right away. A starter with I, E and a common consonant, such as “raise,” shows whether the I lands in the second spot and the E in the fourth. Because no letter repeats, you can spend each guess on new letters without testing doubles.
