Sydney is 16 hours ahead of New York from Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, when US clocks go back at 2 a.m. local time, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The gap was 15 hours from Oct. 4, when New South Wales (NSW) started daylight saving, and it moves again on March 14 and April 4, 2027. The hour differences in this story are our calculation from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) Time Zone Database, the data that browsers and phones use.
Because the two hemispheres change clocks on different dates, the gap shifts three times between Nov. 1, 2026 and April 2027. A one-page printable of the change dates is on this page.
When do the clocks change in the US, Australia and New Zealand?
NIST says that “during 2026, daylight saving time is in effect from March 8 at 2 a.m. (local time) to November 1 at 2 a.m. (local time).” Its rule is that daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March, which makes the next start Sunday, March 14, 2027 (our calculation from that rule).
The NSW Government says daylight saving in New South Wales started on Sunday, 4 October 2026 at 2 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) and ends on Sunday, 4 April 2027 at 3 a.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT). The New Zealand Government says daylight saving there “starts each year at 2am on the last Sunday in September, and ends at 3am on the first Sunday in April.” That gives Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026 and Sunday, April 4, 2027.

What is the time difference between Sydney and New York after Nov. 1?
Sydney is 16 hours ahead of New York from Nov. 1, 2026 until March 13, 2027. In the tz database, Sydney is on UTC+11 in that period, where UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, and New York is on Eastern Standard Time (EST), UTC-5. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is UTC-4. Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart share Sydney’s offsets in the database.
The table shows how many hours each place is ahead of each US city from Nov. 1, 2026 to March 13, 2027. A value of 15.5 means 15 hours 30 minutes. Phoenix and Honolulu figures also come from the tz database.
| Place (UTC offset) | New York | Chicago | Denver | Phoenix | Los Angeles | Anchorage | Honolulu |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart (UTC+11) | 16 | 17 | 18 | 18 | 19 | 20 | 21 |
| Adelaide (UTC+10:30) | 15.5 | 16.5 | 17.5 | 17.5 | 18.5 | 19.5 | 20.5 |
| Brisbane (UTC+10) | 15 | 16 | 17 | 17 | 18 | 19 | 20 |
| Darwin (UTC+9:30) | 14.5 | 15.5 | 16.5 | 16.5 | 17.5 | 18.5 | 19.5 |
| Perth (UTC+8) | 13 | 14 | 15 | 15 | 16 | 17 | 18 |
| Auckland (UTC+13) | 18 | 19 | 20 | 20 | 21 | 22 | 23 |
The NSW Government says that “New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving.” Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are not on that list, so Brisbane, Perth and Darwin keep one offset in our table.
How does the gap change from October 2026 to April 2027?
The gap changes on four dates. Before Oct. 4, Sydney was 14 hours ahead of New York (our calculation). The next table compares New York and Los Angeles with Sydney and Auckland in each period.
| Period | Sydney vs New York | Sydney vs Los Angeles | Auckland vs New York | Auckland vs Los Angeles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 4 to Oct. 31, 2026 | 15 | 18 | 17 | 20 |
| Nov. 1, 2026 to March 13, 2027 | 16 | 19 | 18 | 21 |
| March 14 to April 3, 2027 | 15 | 18 | 17 | 20 |
| From April 4, 2027 | 14 | 17 | 16 | 19 |
Auckland’s 17-hour gap with New York began on Sept. 27, a week before Sydney’s change, because New Zealand started daylight saving first. After April 4, 2027, Brisbane stays 14 hours ahead of New York, while Sydney falls back to the same gap.
What does the gap mean for a call or a flight?
Sydney is on the next calendar day for much of the US day. From Nov. 1, 2026, any time from 8 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) to midnight ET is already the following date in Sydney (our calculation). Check the date as well as the hour before you set a meeting.
| If it is this in Sydney | New York (ET) | Los Angeles (Pacific Time, PT) |
|---|---|---|
| 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2026 to March 13, 2027 | 5 p.m. Sunday | 2 p.m. Sunday |
| 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4 to Oct. 31, 2026 | 6 p.m. Sunday | 3 p.m. Sunday |
| If it is this in New York | Sydney | Auckland |
|---|---|---|
| 9 a.m. Monday, from Nov. 1, 2026 to March 13, 2027 | 1 a.m. Tuesday | 3 a.m. Tuesday |
| 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4 to Oct. 31, 2026 | 12 a.m. Tuesday | 2 a.m. Tuesday |
For other US cities, use the first table in this story and add the hours shown.
