From 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, U.S. clocks fall back one hour and New York becomes 10 hours 30 minutes behind India; it was 9 hours 30 minutes behind. The rule comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and India’s offset does not move, so the whole one-hour change lands on the U.S. side. A one-page printable US-India time converter is on this page for your desk.
The figures below are our calculation from the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) offsets.
Does India change its clocks on Nov. 1, 2026?
No. India keeps Indian Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30, all year. The time zone database that phones and computers use, kept by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), lists no clock change for India since 1945.
The U.S. side does change. NIST says that “during 2026, daylight saving time is in effect from March 8 at 2 a.m. (local time) to November 1 at 2 a.m. (local time).” Eastern Time (ET) goes from Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4) to Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5), and the other zones move the same way. Calls during the short week of Oct. 25 to 31 see no effect from India’s side; only the U.K. and Europe changed on Oct. 25, as our U.K. and Europe time-difference story explains.
How far is India ahead of each U.S. zone?
| U.S. zone | UTC offset until Oct. 31 / from Nov. 1 | India ahead until Oct. 31 | India ahead from Nov. 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern (New York) | UTC-4 / UTC-5 | 9 h 30 min | 10 h 30 min |
| Central (Chicago) | UTC-5 / UTC-6 | 10 h 30 min | 11 h 30 min |
| Mountain (Denver) | UTC-6 / UTC-7 | 11 h 30 min | 12 h 30 min |
| Pacific (Los Angeles) | UTC-7 / UTC-8 | 12 h 30 min | 13 h 30 min |
| Alaska (Anchorage) | UTC-8 / UTC-9 | 13 h 30 min | 14 h 30 min |
| Arizona (Mountain Standard Time all year) | UTC-7 / UTC-7 | 12 h 30 min | 12 h 30 min |
| Hawaii | UTC-10 / UTC-10 | 15 h 30 min | 15 h 30 min |
NIST says that “DST is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the state of Arizona” with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation, which does observe it. So Arizona and Hawaii keep their gap with India, apart from the Navajo Nation in Arizona, which follows the Nov. 1 change. See our report on the U.S. change for the full rule.
What time is it in India when it is 9 a.m. in New York?
From Nov. 1, 2026, 9 a.m. ET is 7:30 p.m. IST on the same day. The table converts common times for the Eastern and Pacific zones, valid from Nov. 1 (we checked each one against the UTC offsets).
| U.S. time | India time (IST) |
|---|---|
| 7 a.m. ET | 5:30 p.m., same day |
| 9 a.m. ET | 7:30 p.m., same day |
| 12 p.m. ET | 10:30 p.m., same day |
| 8 p.m. ET | 6:30 a.m., next day |
| 10 p.m. ET | 8:30 a.m., next day |
| 11:30 p.m. ET | 10 a.m., next day |
| 7 a.m. Pacific Time (PT) | 8:30 p.m., same day |
| 8 p.m. PT | 9:30 a.m., next day |
Going the other way, 9 p.m. IST is 10:30 a.m. ET on the same calendar day in India, and 8:30 a.m. IST is 10 p.m. ET on the evening before.
Which U.S. hours work for a call with India?
Taking 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. IST as the window (our assumption for the guide, not an official rule), these are the U.S. hours that fall inside it from Nov. 1:
| U.S. zone | U.S. morning hours inside the window | U.S. evening hours inside the window |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | Midnight to 10:30 a.m. ET | 10:30 p.m. ET to midnight |
| Pacific | Midnight to 7:30 a.m. PT | 7:30 p.m. PT to midnight |
Before Nov. 1, the same window ran one hour later on U.S. clocks, so a regular slot may now start an hour earlier for you.
A meeting fixed in India time shifts on U.S. clocks. A standing call at 8:30 p.m. IST was at 11 a.m. ET until Oct. 31 and is at 10 a.m. ET from Nov. 1. Phones update automatically when the automatic time zone setting is on, but a calendar invite in a fixed U.S. time needs a manual check.
When does the gap change again?
Under 15 U.S.C. 260a, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March, which is Sunday, March 14, 2027 (our calculation). New York will then be 9 hours 30 minutes behind India again.
